The film’s of Cirio H. Santiago seem to pop up in my collection every so often, in every genre possible. When I found this Roger Corman produced Blaxploitation / Martial Arts / Crime movie for sale for less that ten dollars I couldn’t resist. What makes the film’s of Santiago so interesting is the fact that all of his movies were shot in the Philippines, many of them centering around the United State’s involvement in Southeast Asia. One of the first to tackle the Women In Prison genre [Big Doll House (1971) / Women in Cages (1971)], Cirio helped launch the career of Pam Grier [Escape From L.A. (1996) / Jackie Brown (1997)], and quickly realized that there was a huge untapped market for movies with African-American heroes. Playing the character of TNT Jackson, 1969 Playboy Playmate Jeanne Bell [The Klansman (1974) / The Muthers (1976)] steps in to fill that void. Jackson leaves Harlem for Hong Kong to find her missing brother who has had some trouble with the mob, she must pose as a prostitute in order to find him. …Horrified that she has almost fallen in love with her enemy, she swears bloody revenge. And she relies on a dazzling series of flying triple back kicks to get it… Includes nudity, such as topless karate. I think my VHS copy of this has a better transfer than this DVD, but I can’t complain, as the price was right. Remade as Firecracker (1981) and Angelfist (1992)

This blaxtoiplation film is par for the course; very comical these days, and great for the “so bad its good” crowd. Although a film like this is good for the Dolemite crowd, the DVD’s poor authoring make this a problem. For starters, the DVD has a very diffuse, poorly recorded soundtrack. Instead of keeping the film in mono and the center channel, it sounds like the authors thought it would be clever to spread the sound over all five speakers. The net result is an odd diffuse sound that is only corrected when you turn Dolby encoding off. The video quality is watchable - but scratched and with muted colors. Lesser titles have gotten much better treatment then this.

I don’t mind the minimal extras, and a title like this doesn’t deserve restoration and all that jazz. But the transfer of the film is so below par, I’d say skip the film unless you really need to spend $… that bad.

Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial novel American Psycho, this film tells the story of an 80’s yuppie named Patrick Bateman (played by Christian Bale) who works on Wall Street by day and kills people by night. Like the often misunderstood novel, the film is more of a dark social comedy than a real horror story. Bateman dresses and talks like all the other wealthy, young Wall Street crowd, and thus mistaken identity plays a big part in his getting away with gruesome murders again and again. Bateman’s own grip on reality begins to blur over time and at various times throughout the movie it’s quite obvious that Patrick’s view of reality is a sick, homicidal dream of endless torture and killing. Even when Bateman confesses at one point, no one listens or seems to care. Everyone has their own agenda and the main concern of Bateman’s friends is which extravagant restaurant to dine at next, or getting the latest and greatest business card to impress one another.

Casting Christian Bale was a brilliant choice by director Mary Harron, who almost got fired from the project because of not choosing Leonardo DiCaprio for the starring role. I honestly don’t think anyone could’ve captured Patrick Bateman’s personality more flawlessly than Bale, who gave an extraordinary, chilling performance. And casting Reese Witherspoon as the prissy, bubble-brained Evelyn, who’s engaged to Bateman but knows nothing of his psychotic, homicidal behavior, was a perfect choice. Much of the dialogue in the film is taken directly from Ellis’ book, and the horrific violence of the book was toned down considerably, with much of it taking place off camera. Many viewers don’t seem to appreciate the frequent humor in American Psycho, such as the various times Bateman says crazy things like, “I’m into murders and executions” that no one seems to hear. And his philosophical ramblings about the music of Huey Lewis & the News, Phil Collins, and Whitney Huston are hysterical!

The new “Killer Collector’s Edition” is a mixed bag as far as worthwhile special features go. The documentary “From Book to Screen” is in depth but instead of having new interviews with the stars there are mostly boring interviews with film critics. Plus, it seemed like there was way too much coverage of the novel and very little on the actual shooting of the film. There’s a lame video essay read by some singer and a documentary on the `80s. Thankfully, there are several deleted scenes (with optional director’s commentary) as well as several humorous trailers. My favorite special feature (and probably the main reason why you should by this edition) is the director’s commentary which tells lots of entertaining behind the scenes info. And, the picture and sound quality are better than ever! American Psycho IS NOT a film for everyone, but for those who enjoy intelligent satires with a little horror mixed in, this modern classic is a definite must for your DVD collection! And before you judge or even watch this movie, you should read Ellis’ novel to appreciate the whole, uncensored story.

“I like to dissect girls. Did you know I’m utterly insane?” -P. Bateman

No doubt about it, Mary Harrion’s “American Psycho” is definitely not for every taste and audience demographic. The good news is, perhaps, that the film is nowhere near as gruesome and gory as both its subject matter and its controversial nature would lead one to believe. In fact, its tone of ironic comic detachment helps to de-emphasize the more sordid aspects of the material and to instead highlight the film’s bitingly satiric message.

Set in the mid-1980’s, “American Psycho” casts a scathing eye on the then-brand new, up-and-coming group of 20-something executives known as “yuppies.” Patrick Bateman, the psycho of the title, is a man who literally seems to have everything - stunning good looks, a fantastic physique, a beautiful fiancé, a diploma from Harvard and a successful career as a Wall Street executive. Yet, alone of the young men with whom he consorts, Patrick flatly admits to us in voice-over narration that he is literally an empty-suit - that his perfectly maintained outer appearance, seemingly well-ordered social routine and empty, superficial personal relationships merely mask the moral emptiness that lurks at the core of his soul. Much of the complexity of Patrick’s character comes from the fact that he seems, paradoxically, to be both obsessed with the idea of conforming to the values of the world he lives in, and, at the same time, being strangely conscious of their unreality and meaninglessness. Thus, we see him becoming almost emotionally unglued because he fears he will not be able to reserve the proper table at a posh upscale restaurant or because he feels that one of his corporate buddies has a more impressive looking business card than he does. Much of Patrick’s madness has its roots in the kind of obsessive-compulsive paranoia that arises from the modern insistence that life should and, indeed, can be converted into a perfect, problem-free existence if one just has enough money and a sufficient amount of the right “stuff” to make it that way. Frankly admitting that he feels no emotional attachment to any other human beings, Patrick is thereby free to channel his madness into its ultimate anti-social, taboo-shattering shape and form: serial killing. Thus, as days turn to nights, Patrick begins to rack up his victims and potential victims - a homeless man, assorted prostitutes, an ex-girlfriend, an unctuous business associate, even some policemen who get wise to his activities later in the film.

Luckily for the squeamish among us, far more of the film’s running time is devoted to a comic rather than thriller mode. The brittle, dryly humorous Mary Harrion/Guinevere Turner screenplay mines the corporate world milieu and the twisted rantings of a values-free mind for all their black comedy potential. Christian Bale brings a remarkable subtlety to a touchy role, managing to seem coolly alluring, chillingly detached, touchingly pathetic and wryly amusing all at the same time. Special credit should go to the stark, almost antiseptic look the filmmakers achieve through the art direction and set design, a look that matches in visual terms the moral and emotional emptiness of the characters and their world.

Much was made of the anti-woman tone of the novel at the time of its initial release. Perhaps because the writers and the director are themselves women, the movie seems to have toned down that aspect quite a bit. Indeed, as in a movie like “In the Company of Men,” we find ourselves not so much appalled as sadly bemused by the vehemently anti-women comments uttered by Patrick and his cronies because we see what shallow losers these men really are. Harrion and Turner obviously know whereof they speak.

To reiterate, “American Psycho” may not be everyone’s cup of cinematic tea, but those looking for a sharp little satire of modern American life will find some definite rewards.

“Strangers on a Train” is that rarity, an Alfred Hitchcock film concerning which one talks about an actor’s performance almost as much as the director’s. The actor, of course, is Robert Walker, presenting his remarkable portrayal of Bruno Anthony, the rich, unstable man who offers the hero Guy Haines a deadly proposition: he’ll kill Guy’s wife Miriam (played by the interesting Laura Elliott) if Guy will kill Bruno’s father. Because they are strangers on a train who do not know their intended victims, there will be no motives, therefore perfect alibis. Guy doesn’t take Bruno seriously, which turns out to be a fatal mistake. Bruno is a complicated part. Although he is obssessed with his own superiority, he can be incredibly petty (popping a little boy’s balloon just for the meanness of it), not to mention prissy (”I’m afraid I don’t know what a `smoocher’ is!”). The character seems to overshadow the entire movie, which is appropriate, because Bruno casts a shadow over the easy, affluent world in which he lives. When he crashes the senator’s cocktail party, it’s like Satan has arrived, striding through polite society. And, no, Walker was not nominated for an Oscar. Neither was Joseph Cotten for “Shadow of a Doubt”. Neither was Anthony Perkins for “Psycho”. The Academy evidently had difficulty with Hitchcock’s anti-heroes. Hitchcock originally wanted William Holden for the role of Guy Haines, but I think Holden was so savvy and macho, it would have been difficult to accept him as a psycopath’s pawn. Farley Granger is atheletic enough to be convincing as a tennis champ, but he has a boyishness which makes the vulnerable aspects of the character believable. The film is filled with the touches one associates with Hitchcock. Some are obvious, like Miriam’s strangulation reflected in her eyeglasses. Others are more subtle: After the murder, Bruno approaches Guy outside Guy’s apartment house. At first Guy cannot tell who is calling his name in the dark. Bruno is standing near a large gate with wrought-iron bars; and, as Guy comes near him, he steps behind the gate — in other words, he’s behind bars. Then, after he has told Guy about Miriam’s death and Guy is absorbing the shock, a police car pulls up in front of Guy’s apartment house and Guy himself ducks behind the gate. Now they’re BOTH behind bars. Hitchcock was a genius, no doubt about it.I wonder how many viewers have noticed the odd discrepency near the end. Bruno has stepped off the train at Metcalf, holding the incriminating cigarette lighter he hopes to plant on the amusement park island, thus framing Guy. A pedestrian brushes by him and the lighter falls into a storm drain in the street. Bruno, frantic, tries to enlist the aid of passersby. However, he says (not once but twice) “I dropped my cigarette CASE in the drain!” Walker, of course, was in the process of drinking himself to death; but the mistake could easily have been corrected with a little dubbing. It’s bothered me for years why it wasn’t.Director of Photography Robert Burks began his long association with Hitchcock on this picture. He must have worked night and day to satisfy Hitchcock’s demands, but his loveliest effect is the amusement park’s neon lights against a glowing black-and-white sunset. The film’s mood is enhanced by Dimitri Tiomkin’s romantically mysterious score. It’s particularly striking in the movie’s”coda” when Guy is trying desperately to finish a tennis game (allegro) and Bruno is desperately trying to reach that damn lighter (adagio). Hitchcock and Tiomkin worked a couple of more times together but never more effectively than in thisdazzling masterpiece.

It’s important to note two things about this edition of “Strangers on a Train.” First off, the description on Amazon.com’s page is incorrect. This DVD is not in widescreen. The second thing is, to you widescreen buffs out there (including myself) — Relax! This film was never shot in widescreen. In fact, prior to 1953 (The Robe), there was never anything bigger than 35mm! This is why this film (and you’ll be surprised to hear), many, many classic films will never be produced in widescreen. They don’t exist. You should buy this DVD because of the video quality and the extra “goodies.” Gone with the Wind in widescreen? Nope, never was, even though it was blown up to 70mm and cropped horribly in the 1968 re-issue. What’s out there on DVD on Gone with the Wind is standard 35mm “TV semi-square” framing, because that’s the way it was shot. Wizard of Oz, Casablanca, Citizen Kane? Nope, never shot in anything greater than 35mm. It’s a Wonderful Life? No again. Widescreen is limited to theatrical films issued for the most part, after 1953, when competition with television forced studios to come up with the “panoramic” gimmicks to bring people back into the theaters. This is period (1953-1963) when Cinemascope, Todd-AO, VistaVision, Super Panavision 70 and other widescreen formats were born — and the most extreme example was Cinerama, which used three cameras and is used to best effect in the DVD version of How the West Was Won. So don’t fret, this DVD is good, crisp and clean and formatted as Alfred Hitchcock intended! Tomorrow’s movies will be in IMAX (see Fantasia 2000, in selected theaters now).

A few years ago I started watching IDOJ for the first time since I was a kid on cable TV reruns. As an adult, I was able to perceive many things that simply went over my head as a child. This was actually quite an edgy show by mid 1960’s standards. Oh how I wished this show would be released on DVD, and lo and behold it my wish was granted!

(And, I bought the B&W version because I prize historical accuracy. I want to see exactly what was shown on TV back then, without the lousy TV’s we had back then.)

You’ve got a blond bombshell, who is eager to please in every way a man could imagine, living out of wedlock with an astronaut, who represented the most heroic all-american roll models we had back in the 1960’s. And somehow, for years, this show provided good clean TV fun for millions of viewers.

Part of why it worked I suppose is that Jeannie really wanted to marry Tony, and slowly but surely she broke down his resolve not to marry her until toward the end of the series, when they actually do get married. The meta-narrative of the show is that

Jeannie got her wish. (Oh yeah, and she slept in her bottle until she did!)

Is IDOJ really a “knockoff” of Bewitched? Yes and no. I rather think of IDOJ as an improvement.

For example, the last scene in the pilot has Tony walking into his bedroom and closing the door, Jeannie turning to smoke and entering his bedroom under the door, Tony yelling “Knock it off!!” or something like that, and Jeannie coming back out from under the door and reappearing with a wink to the camera. It’s all left to the imagination what happened in there and it’s funny!

And that’s where IDOJ is very different from Bewitched. In IDOJ, the hottie with the supernatural powers gets to be sexual, whereas in Bewitched she does not.

In Bewitched, Samantha is the sane one with a world of lunacy around her in which she tries to maintain order and survive the crisis of the week. She is usually uptight and in crisis mode and after a while I just start to wonder what she ever saw in Darrin in the first place. Also, this formula gets repetitve. I doubt that I’ll ever order the Bewitched series for that very reason: it’s much the same story every week.

In IDOJ, Tony is the sane one in a world of lunatics, and Jeannie is often part of the chaos. Jeannie gets to be beautiful, sexual, smart, mischevious, and most importantly, unpredictable. Will she be part of the problem or the solution this week? Or, will she try to be part of the solution and instead bring on more chaos? You really don’t know whats coming.

Also, I really appreciate the work that went into some of the props and stunts that often only provided a gag lasting a few seconds. In particular when Jeannie makes herself small and has to hide in items like coffee cups, pencil holders, and things like that. Those kind of scenes take a lot of work to set up. There’s some genuine special effects work in this series beyond just objects dissappearing and reappearing.

Oh, and one more thing. The DVDs are single sided!! I can actually look at them and see what disc I’m holding! I can handle them without going into “brain surgeon” mode in order to avoid damaging them! They actually did the packaging correctly! WOW!

So, here you’ve got a properly packaged example of the best that 1960’s sitcoms had to offer, and for under $30. Stop wishing and start buying!

Postscript: My one dissappointment with this DVD set is the commentary on the pilot episode. I expected great things since the commentators would be the main three actors in the cast, but it’s like they didn’t understand the purpose of a commentary or didn’t prepare. Don’t expect a lot of additional insights into the series. I tried to watch this with my wife and got so embarrassed for them that we turned it off and just watched the pilot episode without the commentary.

Yay!

IDOJ is finally getting the magic treatment it deserves, the show will be released in both B&W and color, although only season one was filmed in black and white. Also be on the look out for the IDOJ movie starring Jessica alba as Jeannie, Jimmy Fallon as Major Nelson , no word on who will play Dr.Bellows or my favorite character on the show Major Roger Healy.

Like most baby boomers, I’ve watched this film dozens of times in the past on broadcast TV, then VHS tape, then LaserDisc … but I had never actually SEEN “The Wizard of Oz” until this newly restored DVD came out. It’s an amazing transfer. The sepia-tone Kansas sequences are startlingly sharp and clear, and the Technicolored world “Over the Rainbow” is truly dazzling. I found myself fascinated by details I had never noticed before: the glittering corn stalks in the Scarecrow’s field; the mirror-like floors of the Emerald City; the polished buttons on the guardsmen’s uniforms. Incredibly, even the individual grains of red sand in the Witch’s hourglass stood out and glistened! All these minor-but-sumptuous visual details served to heighten the magical spell that the film has always woven, enhancing the performances, the story, and the music.

The DVD extras are a mind-boggling embarrassment of riches. The “Making Of” documentary hosted by the incomparable Angela Lansbury is worth the price of the DVD alone, but there’s so much more: an international poster gallery, interviews with cast members, deleted scenes, production stills, radio clips, etc, etc. There’s enough material to keep even the most casual viewer fascinated for hours, and a true Oz buff will be occupied for days!

If you only bought a DVD player to watch this one disc, it would well be worth the expense. Treat yourself, and fall in love with this classic film again … for the first time.

I was just critized for foisting off the following review of the 3-disk DVD set as a review of the new Blu-ray. I didn’t; Amazon did. As anyone who’s been here for a while will notice, Amazon throws all DVD reviews into the same bucket, regardless of the edition. So don’t blame me.

There’s no need to discuss “The Wizard of Oz” itself, a classic among classics (though I’ll have something to say about its “philosophy” later on). You probably want to know whether the UltraResolution transfer justifies the purchase.

It does. Oh, yes it does.

“The Wizard of Oz” has always looked good, one of the better Technicolor films. Unlike “Gone With the Wind”, which was generally dark and desaturated, and which UltraResolution greatly improved, I didn’t expect much enhancement for “Oz”.

Was I ever wrong. I stared with my jaw hanging open. “Oz” is the best UltraResolution transfer by far — and the others were not exactly chopped liver.

The improvement in detail and sharpness is startling, especially as the original prints did not seem obviously lacking in either. Even more amazing is the expansion of the tonal scale. Dark scenes (particularly those in the forest and outside the “witches” castle) are now filled with rich detail. Have you ever noticed how beautiful the Winkies’ red, white, and gray uniforms are? I hadn’t — until now.

These enhancements combine produce the biggest improvement of all — a major revelation of _texture_. The “feltiness” of many costumes is obvious. The burlap of the Scarecrow’s face is now plainly visible, particularly in the close-up where he misstates the Pythagorean Theorem. And the Lion’s costume is a thick pile of fur you want to reach out and stroke. You can see every last strand of hair.

I’m exaggerating only slightly when I say the improvements of this UltraResolution transfer are not much less than those from cleaning the Sistine Chapel’s frescos. It’s as if layers of murk and grime — that you never even knew were there! — have been stripped away. Until you view it, you cannot imagine what this film (that is, the original camera negatives) _really_ looks like. It’s a shame the people who created “Oz” never got to see it this way.

The image quality is so high that I often felt as if I were looking through a window at live performers. (Well, almost.) No matter what versions you already have, you won’t be disappointed with this one. I watched it twice in two days, and I might even view it a third time tonight.

My only quibble is that several matte paintings do not blend properly, because the hues at the join lines do not match those of the scene. This could have been fixed; I suspect it seemed too much work for a small improvement. (A friend suggested that these sorts of things are left in because videophiles enjoy finding them.)

As to the differences between the two- and three-disk sets… The latter includes a packet of original programs and promotional material of the sort we haven’t seen in 40 years ago. (Remember the 50-cent deluxe programs for road-show films?) There’s also a set of 10 reproductions of Kodachrome publicity photographs. For this viewer, these extras alone justify the higher price.

The third disk will be of most interest to lovers of all things Oz. It includes a handsomely produced biography of L. Frank Baum (interesting enough that you might want to watch it more than once), plus all the silent Oz films and a Technicolor Oz cartoon. The existence of these is well-known to anyone familiar with the history of Oz productions, but they’ve never appeared (as far as I know) in any home-video format.

The films are problematic. The two from Baum’s production company are the best — they have style, charm, and imagination. The others are cheesy ripoffs that bear little relation to the original book. The Larry Semon — a once wildly-popular but now virtually forgotten cartoonist and comic * — version is especially obnoxious, as it is little more than a vehicle for Semon’s brand of physical comedy. The Baum estate is at least partly to blame — _any_ movie version must have seemed more attractive than none, especially as the technology to make a convincing version of “Oz” would not exist for another 15 years.

The film’s opening titles praise the book’s “kindly philosophy”, which seems to be either “You already have everything you need to be happy”, or “The answer to your problems lies within yourself”. These are not so much “kindly” as reflections of the hard-nosed “All your problems are your own fault” and “If you’re not a success, it’s because you’re lazy” homilies that grew out of the great opportunity for personal development and material success this country offered.

I believe L. Frank Baum had something a bit different in mind. “The Wizard of Oz” is a fairy tale in which magic has no bearing on the issues at the center of the story. I believe Baum wanted to discourage children from fantasizing that magic could be a solution to one’s problems.

So… he has the four principals make a grueling journey to the Emerald City, then find the wizard is a humbug. (What a shame the blander “fake”, “fraud”, or “phony” have replaced that delightful word.) He posesses no magic to supply wit, love, or grit, which the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion have demonstrated they already have.

Baum’s “moral” is simple — Love, wisdom, and courage are what we need to get through life. No one can _give_ them to us, because we _already_ possess them, and all we need to do is express them.

“Is that right?”

“That’s all it is.”

Now… the question you’ve been waiting for the answer to… Is the Blu-ray set worth the price?

I viewed the Blu-ray on a Pioneer 60″ Pro Kuro, fed from a Sony BDP-S550. I also watched the DVD on the Pioneer (fed from the same Blu-ray player), and on a 36″ Sony 400-series WEGA “improved definition” TV (fed from a Sony DVP-S7000).

The DVD remains a terrific DVD, and looks terrific on a high-quality 480i monitor. (See the preceding review.) It was, and still is, a demo-quality DVD.

When played on the BD player, and upconverted to 1080p, the DVD’s image on the Kuro is pretty darn good — the sharpness and detail are at least “acceptable”. But when you play the Blu-ray disk, the image goes from “acceptable” to almost-startling. Two examples… Note the enhanced detail and texture in the weather-beaten wood above the WWE’s lifeless legs. And in the crowd scenes, you can see (just about) every Munchkin face. There is virtually no smearing of detail.

So… should you rush right out in a buying frenzy and get the BD edition? It depends.

The DVD is good enough for an excellent picture on a high-quality SD monitor. But even upconverted, it isn’t good enough for a _large_ HD display. If you have, say, a 40″ display; your BD player has a good upconverter (not all do); and you don’t sit “on top of” the screen (as I do); you might see little difference between the DVD and the Blu-ray.

But if you’re a video fuss-budget (as I am) and sit closer than the “experts” recommend (why _shouldn’t_ you?), you will almost certainly prefer the Blu-ray. It’s your call.

A few remarks on the extras… The wristwatch, as the kid in the Ally bank commercial says, is a piece of junk. The design shows no particular style, wit, or imagination. And as others have said, “The Dreamer of OZ” is a wretched transfer, very badly unpconverted to 1080. It is not of acceptable quality, and should have been put on the DVD disk.

I will come back later (I hope) with some more comments on the sound and the other extras. Forcing yourself to repeatedly watch large chunks of a movie, regardless of its quality, is an ennervating experience.

Well, I guess for being the first to review this anime I will try to give a detailed review, as much as it is possible, without giving to many spoilers away.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Munto 2: Beyond the Walls of Time! Click Here

To begin with, if you have not watched the first movie (OVA) than you should watch it first because it is basically the continuation of the first one and many things, or plots of the story, are based on it. Furthermore, it starts exactly from there where the first one ended.

Apart from it, a brief outline of the story (SPOILERS included for the ones who have not watched the first movie!)

Buy,Download, Or Stream Munto 2: Beyond the Walls of Time! Click Here

After saving his Magical world, which happened because magical king Munto combine his powers with the ones of Yunami - a girl from our world, Munto is facing problems from his enemies who try to destroy the heavily world blinded by the new power released. Problem is that the heavily beings are getting weaker as they continue to fight and Munto is basically in deep s…Yunami on the other hand, has started again to `connect’ with Munto and wants to help him. The issue here is that Munto is afraid to call her back again, when thinking of how much pain he put her the first time and hesitates (I am referring to mentally pain here but also that Munto saw a vision that if he would call her back she might die. Additionally, it is implied that both of them are in love with each other, something that will become clear latter on). On top of that his enemies, by having seen Yunami (from Munto 1), want to find a way to draw her back to the magical world and use her and her powers. Finally, she tries to find a way to break through the barrier of space and time and enter the magical world so that to aid Munto, who will also get some help from her two other friends and school mates.

Now, to be honest why did I give it four stars, what is my recommendation and why:

To begin with, the animation is astonishing, mind-blowing I would say, especially during the battle scenes. Moreover, the story gets very emotional and in parts depressing.

Yet, if you have seen `The Last Exile’, `X-One etc’ or `Infinite Riviyous’ (I apologize if I have misspelled it), although Munto 2 is higly recommended, you should not expect such strong story, plot and background story, as these animes had. The only excuse that I can think of is that the OVA lasts for about 100 minutes while the previous mentioned series last for at least five to six hours. This comparison made me give it four stars.(Not to mention the fact that the show has the potential and a strong ‘base storyline’ to become an entire series)

As for the dub, if you prefer the dub version, actually it is very good and professional orchestrated, as is the music too. Thumbs up…

As for extras, well the typical stuff that you usually find in any other anime DVD, like trailer previews, not credit opening/ending, drawings etc.

Now to the final verdict, buying it or not?

I personally recommend this show but I also have to be honest to the reader. If you have seen the first OVA and liked it than you will not be disappointed with this one (lasts for double as long as the first one), is definitely better than the first Munto and the answer is: Yes.

If you like this kind of anime genre like - let us say Fushigi Yugi, and do not mind of the few drawbacks (as I have explained above), than the answer would be Yes, otherwise: No.

As for the price, when comparing it with other anime OVAs, it is cheaper than the other ones (which spectrum is around 23-29 dollars), than go ahead and buy this one.

To conclude, it is worth at least to rent it, but as I said earlier it is up to you to make the final decision, and if you do not mind of its few drawbacks than I can recommend this show. If on the other hand, you prefer anime shows and story depths like Evangelion, FMP, CB, X, The Last Exile or Kenshin than I believe you might not want to buy this one.

As I said it is entirely up to you to decide.

I hope that I could help… ^_^

Ok, I’ve got to be completly honest here, It was good. Not great, but good, and here’s why.

The story its self is great. Its got the (suposedly)normal school girl who meets the actiony boy from another world, and, even better, the mix of a normal life with an epic one, then the two world colliding. The animation is excellent, the characters are well-put together, voices are well matched, and its a really touching short story…

BUT thats it! Its just a short story! there’s, so far, no television series, and no word about a third movie. So far, it ends here. But it can be sooo much more! And thats mostly why you gotta watch out. If you bought the first movie, you’d see the stories potential. And it just upset me thinking that this might be the end of the entire thing, thus makeing the movie good, not great!

I recomend that you buy this DVD if you bought the 1st one. Not only cause it helps finish the story you started, but it also gives you a little MORE to be satisfied with. And if you get hooked on these movies as much as i did, More is better than nothing. If I were you , after I bought this movie, I’d pray that they came out with a series…or at least a third movie!!

Enjoy.

Never, that’s what Burt Munro has to say to us.Wow! This is a great flick and Anthony Hopkins is at his subtle best!Way more than 5 stars. The synopsis:Burt Munro, a Kiwi from far south New Zealand has been building and rebuilding his motorcycle for the last 40 years, dreaming of the day when he and the bike can go to Bonneville Salt Flats,USA and see what they can really do. When Burt’s heart goes bad on him, his dreaming is threatened to come to an end. Burt is not ready to stop dreaming. He decides to mortgage his house and bring his dream to life. He and the motorcycle head for American and the Bonneville Salt Flats,Utah to participate in ‘Speed Week’. When they land in in the US the fun begins. His journey from Long Beach to Utah brings him through a cross section of American ‘characters’. Each recognizes in Burt, that burning desire to achieve a dream and each helps him in the way that they can to make that dream happen. There are so many funny and beautiful moments but one that come to mind is when Burt meets Tina, the transvestite motel clerk…that whole interaction is so beautiful. Or when Burt finally stands on Bonneville Salt Flats, by himself thinking of all the greatness that has transpired here and now he, Burt Munro, can at last test himself on this ’sacred ground’. Man! it brings shivers to see Anthony Hopkins do that moment. While the film is about motorcycles and fast cars, it is not a movie about motorheads. It is a story we can all get something out of- even your Grandma will love it. Don’t hold back-go see it now. A Cultural Sidebar:I happen to have been in New Zealand when this film started it’s world release in it’s home country..Oct. 2005. The Kiwis, normally a reserved and sober lot, were crazy on this movie. For a week that is all the entertainment news there was, end to end on both islands. Munro’s actually Indian Scout motorcycle made the rounds of movie houses, sort of a hero’s artifact for theater goers inspection. In general, the Kiwis felt that Hopkins and Donaldson had really nailed the Kiwi national ‘character’, straight talking but not offensive, a master of ‘#8 wire’ ingenuity, reserved but determined. All this allowed Munro to build his bike to it’s peak, get it to America, and rise above the better financed competition. Hopkins was given accolades for nailing a South Island,New Zealand accent.People that had known Munro claimed Hopkins had portrayed Munro as they knew him. As an American I like they way Donaldson portrayed Americans.I found the movie to be a classic American dream tale. Go see the movie, you won’t be sorry.

Burt Munro was a man who had many loves: women, speed, things mechanical, tinkering, life itself and perhaps most passionately and enduringly his ancient Indian motorcycle. This film lovingly chronicles Burt’s pursuit of the seemingly impossible dream inspired by his Indian, and the amazing quest which took him from the village of Invercargill, New Zealand to the Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The World’s Fastest Indian! Click Here

Director Donaldson tells Burt’s feel good story in a straightforward and unemotional manner, with many of the scenes being filmed on location in Invercargill and at Bonneville. Anthony Hopkins is so perfectly cast that he seems to become Burt. His interviews while promoting the film made it clear how much he enjoyed the role and respected Burt’s achievements; the Kiwis who knew Burt were very pleased with his faithful portrayal in his film. The supporting cast also does an excellent job, although in all probability the only other individuals recognizable to most moviegoers will be Diane Ladd as Ada and Bruce Greenwood as Jerry, who helps Burt overcome the resistance he encounters when he arrives at Bonneville with a vehicle which breaks all the safety rules. In addition, deserving special mention in a brief appearance as Tina is Chris Williams.

The director very intelligently decided to provide several humorous moments and a lot of casual humor to keep the approximately two hour long movie moving at a reasonable pace. The natural tension inherent in several obstacles Burt had to overcome (e.g. his lack of financial resources, the aforementioned mentioned problems before being allowed to race his vehicle, a heart condition which landed him in the hospital) are wisely handled in a summary way; after all, everyone in the audience already knows the reason why the film was made is because despite his limited resources and working entirely on his own Burt was successful in converting his motorcycle which was originally not built to exceed 54 MPH into THE WORLD’S FASTEST INDIAN.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The World’s Fastest Indian! Click Here

My five star rating for this film is not based on the fact that I think it is a great movie; in fact, it left several unanswered questions to which I hope that further research will provide some answers. And I certainly wish it had managed to incorporate more of the wonderfully scenic New Zealand countryside where Burt lived. Rather, my rating is based on the engaging manner in which this film tells Burt’s tale; he captivated me just as he eventually managed to captivate almost everyone with whom he came in contact, even those individuals who didn’t share his belief in himself or perhaps considered him a little crazy. In summary, I highly recommend this story of perseverance and achievement for everyone willing to spend a few hours with Burt as he pursues his dream to its satisfying and highly emotional conclusion. (The director’s genius was in recognizing that the story itself would provoke most moviegoers into cheering wildly or crying tears of joy with Burt before his time in Bonneville is finished, no cinematic tricks or artificial plot devices were necessary.) It is truly awe inspiring to realize that many of the records which Burt set still survive today, and thus his machine is not only still THE WORLD’S FASTEST INDIAN but remains unbeaten by all engines in its category.

This is a great little comedy, kind of a musical with lots of laughs, catchy songs, and some classic scenes. Lee Marvin is very deserving of his Oscar, as scene stealer Kid Shelleen. This drunken gun slinger manages to miss the broad side of a barn. Jane Fonda is great as the revenge seeking Cat Balou. “The face of an angel, fights like the devil.”

However, the real treat of this film is the pair of wandering minstrels. Stubby Kaye (Nicely Nicely in Guys and Dolls) strums around with Nat “King” Cole providing a lovely soundtrack. Their performance really makes this movie work, and moves it beyond a western parody.

The late Lee Marvin was a very versatile actor, as demonstrated in this motion picture. He much deserved the academy award for his dual role, playing both the alcoholic gunman, Kid Shelleen, and the evil gunman who is his opponent. He said later that it was a fun role that did not take much of his time.

The story is set during the time of the railroad robber barons. They acquired needed right-of-ways by whatever means. When Cat’s father is killed by the railroad’s hired gun, she hires Kid Shelleen, sight unseen, and has to get him into shape. They dispense their own form of justice, but the law is on the side of the railroad. The motion picture has many memorable scenes that will stick in your memory.

Lee Marvin’s performance made this a classic motion picture. Jane Fonda plays Cat, but without Lee it might have been a so-so film.

I grew up with the Tony Randall/Jack Klugman sitcom version of “The Odd Couple.” Everything about it is funny. Having seen for the first time the movie, I never before imagined how smart Neil Simon could be. The movie outshines the TV series, and is worth the space on any standard comedy DVD library shelf.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Odd Couple - The Centennial Collection! Click Here

In the TV series, Klugman’s Oscar is a bohemian bachelor living in slop, and apparently content. In the movie, Walter Matthau’s Oscar is no neater, but five times as deep. Although he lives in a divorced man’s squalor of old cigars and warm beer, he wants more. He’s lonely for his wife and kids, and regrets not making his alimony payments. His life is so disorganized that he wastes money by squandering cash on dinners out and gambling.

When Felix Ungar, as played by Jack Lemmon, Oscar’s poker buddy, comes to stay when his wife divorces him, lifestyles clash.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Odd Couple - The Centennial Collection! Click Here

On the surface, the clash is about organization and housekeeping. More deeply, Felix and Oscar duel as Super Ego and ID. Consistently archetypal, they are, in a more modern sense, like Marge and Homer Simpson, each seeing life through their limited expressions. Felix is uptight, and forever second-guessing himself. Oscar is living life for the moment, and never stopping to consider his responsibilities.

Oscar cares about Felix more than their other poker buddies, and connects with him as alter self, regarding their friendship worth pursuing. Since Felix needs a place to stay, Oscar offers up his ample apartment. The conflicts arise soon after, but not without each appreciating what the other brings to the relationship. Ironies abound when Felix’s hypersensitivities gain him the affection of two dimwitted but attractive sisters, and Oscar’s unbridled hormones.

Oscar can’t help but enjoy Felix’s great cooking and cleaning habits. He eats better, saves money, and finds his home is a nice a place to be when cigarette butts don’t litter the floor.

No remake could collect such a cast. Matthau and Lemmon are known here as a duo on par with any of the great matches, like Bogie and Bacall, Bing and Bob, or Abbott and Costello. John Fiedler as the soft spoken family man, Vinnie, and Herb Edelman as Murray the cop are casted primely. One reason “The Odd Couple II” misses is this class cast. Matthau and Lemmon bring a lot to the table, but with Murray and Vinnie (plus Monica Evans and Carole Shelley respectively as the giggly sisters, Cecily and Gwendolyn Pigeon), anything made 30+ years later won’t do.

Superbly written, “The Odd Couple” is one of those comedies with intelligence. Never does Neil Simon try to pan off one-liners. Even as Oscar tosses out slicing one-phrased commentaries as swiftly as Grouch Marx, there is more than a quick chuckle behind it. It is the myriad of layers, subtle commentary and sly interjections that lift this script up an extra level, placing it as a classic.

Surprisingly entertaining is the theme. It is the same them as in the TV series, but plays in varied orchestrations throughout the movie’s context. It was one of the great TV themes, and to hear it extrapolated in several variations makes it so much more enjoyable.

I fully recommend “The Odd Couple.”

Anthony Trendl

editor, HungarianBookstore.com

It just doesn’t get too much funnier than Matthau & Lemmon in this movie. Each scene is a treasure. I’d heard that Matthau wanted to play Felix first, saying that he could’ve “phoned in” his performance of Oscar. But, this was perfect casting. A line that still is one of the best is when Oscar goes through his littany of things that irritate him about Felix. He tells him to stop the little notes he leaves on his pillow. “We are all out of toilet paper. F.U. It took me three hours to figure out that F.U. meant Felix Unger!” You gotta own this one. It’s a classic.

Many people will look at this film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic musical spectacular, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA with mixed emotions. There are people who will be upset that Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford, who played the original Christine and Phantom respectively, were not allowed to recreate their signature roles. There will also be people who’ll be disappointed that this version is not a literal translation of the stage musical. Finally, we have the critics of both Webber and director Joel Schumacher, who have both been accused of wretched excess in previous projects in their individual careers. Taken as a film version however, this PHANTOM stands the test of time, not only as a wonderful musical film, but as one of the more faithful versions of Gaston Laroux’s romance/horror novel.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Phantom of the Opera! Click Here

Starting with a black and white prologue, the film tells the story of budding opera star Christine Daae and the two men who fight for her heart: the noble Viscount who she knew in childhood, and the mysterious Phantom of the Paris Opera House who hides his ugliness behind a half-mask while sponsoring Christine’s career. Like the stage production, this film is awash in glorious colors and sets that would put many epics to shame. It’s well balanced by solid performances that help propel the romantic, if melodramatic, story along.

Gerard Butler makes for a wonderfully dark and obsessive Phantom, while allowing the character to retain the audience’s sympathy. Miranda Richardson is solid as the dour Madame Giry, who knows the Phantom’s secret. Minnie Driver easily gets the most laughs as the over-bearing diva, Carlotta. (It’s interesting to note that Ms. Driver’s singing is dubbed in the film proper, while she actually sings the new closing credits melody “Learn to be Lonely.”) Patrick Wilson makes for a stalwart, if somewhat bland, Viscount. But the strongest impression is made by the lovely Emmy Rossum. Only in her late teens when filming, she turns in a fantastic performance with a crystal clear voice that does justice to Webber’s score. Joel Schumacher does a strong enough job in directing this film, allowing the music and the screenplay that he co-wrote with Webber to shine.

In the end, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is a delightful spectacle that does justice in its own way to both the stage original and Laroux’s book. As such, this is a film I highly recommend.

You know that a movie works when it follows you long after you’ve left the movie theater. I saw the Broadway tour of “Phantom of the Opera” a few years ago and it has been my favorite musical since. I love it more than Cats, 42nd Street, West Side Story, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon…you name it. Its romanticism and beautiful songs just blew me away.

I was then somewhat hesitant to see the film version, fearing that it would not live up to my expectations. A little over two hours later and I found myself crying over the Phantom (Gerard Butler) and his love for the young Christine Daae (Emmy Rossum) as she decides between him or the nobleman Raoul (Patrick Wilson).

In short, I love this movie! It was everything I had hoped it to be and more. The story is faithful to the stage version but it also gives the audience a closer look into the lives of the three main characters. The art direction, sets and costumes are resplendent and breath-taking. And the songs are brought to life superbly by the talented cast of young newcomers (Rossum, Wilson) and film veterans (Miranda Richardson, Ciaran Hinds, Simon Callow).

I know many would argue that Michael Crawford was a superb Phantom…that is, except for me. I always felt that Crawford’s voice was too high-pitched and not manly enough. To me, Gerard Butler is more effective Phantom. Apart from being incredibly handsome (under that make-up), tall and well built, he also has this rough and raspy voice that is very masculine and full of passion. He IS the Phantom! Emmy Rossum has a hauntingly beautiful voice and has an innocence and sweetness that fits perfectly for Christine. Her voice gives me goosebumps! Patrick Wilson’s romantic voice contrasts well with that of the Phantom’s. After all, one is supposed to be a nobleman and the romantic hero while the other is dark, mysterious and brooding (like the misunderstood Quasimodo of “Hunchback of the Notre Dame.”) But even without the singing, Gerard Butler turns in a memorable and passionate performance as the Phantom and you really do feel for him in the end. If there was one fault to this film, for me, it would be Minnie Driver’s Carlotta. She was so over the top that I sometimes found her grating.

All in all, however, I walked out of the theater wanting to see “Phantom of the Opera” again and again (I’ve now seen it twice and counting). I couldn’t get the music out of my head and have since purchased the CD. I can’t wait for the dvd to come out so I can watch it over and over. I highly recommend it to fans of the stage version, music lovers and incurable romantics everywhere. And if you loved the songs, be sure to pick up the equally superb soundtrack. This phantom will haunt you long after you’ve left the movie theater….and I have gladly fallen under its spell. Superb!
